Mike Berger on lighting design for the ACM Awards
In this episode of GLP Lighting Legends, Los Angeles-based lighting designer Mike Berger reflects on a career that began with theatrical lighting in school and mobile DJ work before leading him into major broadcast productions – including one of the most high-profile television events in the United States: the ACM Awards.
Having been involved with the ACMs for many years, progressing from intern to lighting designer, Berger offers insight into the design thinking behind a live broadcast of this scale. For him, lighting design is never only about looks and emotion. It also begins with logistics, timing, changeovers and the practical realities of delivering a seamless live television production.
In the video, Berger explains how lighting supports storytelling, energy and musical dramaturgy on a large broadcast stage – and how GLP tools such as the JDC Line, impression X5 Compact, JDC2 IP and FORCE 120 contribute to that process.

It also becomes clear why the JDC Line was one of the defining fixtures of the production for Berger. Used as a precise linear design element for both the awards stage and band performances, it allowed him to combine colour-driven storytelling with impactful white light. The X5 Compact also impressed him with its strong output, compact form factor and the colour quality associated with GLP.
To close the conversation, Berger shares a clear piece of advice for young lighting designers: talk to the people who are already doing what you want to do. Careers are built through hard work, connection and exchange – and sometimes, through being in the right place at the right time.
