The Paris Motor Show is one of the most visited auto shows in the world. Here the latest innovations and highlights for the next two years are presented. It is also known for its concept cars and presentation of new products in terms of electric cars and driver assistance systems.

On the 2,000 m² stand of OPEL, Burkhard Jüterbock was responsible for designing the lighting for a 55 meter long and 5.8 meter high ’perspective theatre’. Built behind an oversized black picture frame this ’theatre’ was set on three levels with printed Alu-Dibond flora. In front of the black background LED screens, printed cityscapes and other applications were installed.

"We were looking for a line source which could produce brilliant white light and RGB and had a built-controllable zoom lens. We wanted to make the inks appear in as true a colour as possible. Due to the expected high ambient light on the car booth, we also needed a very high luminance,” stated the lighting designer. "The distance between the various planes was determined on site and with only about 30 cm in depth this limited us from the outset in our selection of lamps.

“We tested LED battens from different manufacturers but it quickly became clear that only the GLP X4 Bar met our requirements. Also, because of the pivoting movement in the X4 Bar Tilt we could do the fine head adjustment with the lighting console on the ground,” says Burkhard Jüterbock.

A total of 222 impression X4 Bar 20 and 9 X4 Bar 10 were installed. The hanging of the lamps between the different levels presented the engineering team of SCHOKOPRO with a major challenge, because of the need for the lamps to remain accessible for the 16-day duration of the exhibition period.

The renowned lighting designer explains: "A very close cooperation with the trade fair construction company was necessary during the planning stage to ensure the modules were installed correctly. Thanks to the excellent flicker free dimming of all four colours from 0-100% we were able to produce many different shades of white with the X4 Bar.

The colours we were able to adapt quickly and sometimes we operated the lights in the expanded 88 channel mode. This allowed us to address each pixel individually and adjust the colours of the different inks very precisely. With varying degrees of brightness and colour temperatures for each level we managed to create an extremely 3-Dimensional image for the viewer and create a true interactive ‘perspective theatre’.

Accentuation of the coloured flower prints, cityscapes, exhibits and other effects were created with a total of 30 impression X4 LED wash lights. These were evenly mounted in a few meters distance from the picture frame within the rig.

"Thanks to the equally good RGBW mixing we could combine coloured lighting applications with high brightness, and always had sufficient in reserve to produce a good contrast with the general lighting on the stand. The tight zoom of 7 ° allowed us also to accentuate details from 8 meters away.”

“All in all, the impression X4 Bar was the ideal lamp for our purpose. In my view, there is no other Bar with so many good features in a single device!” concluded Burkhard Jüterbock.
