Tim Kamrad on tour: Big cinematic effects in club format … with GLP

Designer Patrick Rabus combines impression X5, JDC2 IP and X4 Bar 20 for maximum effect in limited space

At the beginning of 2025, Patrick Rabus was tasked with handling the production design for a tour by Tim Kamrad, a young pop artist who is increasingly attracting attention with his electronic sounds and strong stage presence.

For almost the first month, Kamrad toured medium-sized venues in Germany. “The venues were deliberately kept intimate, but Tim’s presence has grown considerably since then – not least thanks to [his appearance as judge on German TV series] The Voice of Germany,” explains Patrick. “It wasn’t about appearing bigger than we are, but rather about shaping the stage in a way that does justice to his artistic ambitions and increased awareness—with depth, dramatic precision and moments of surprise.”

A Frame for Emotion

A key element of the design was a custom-made frame, accentuated with LED strips, that visually marked out the stage. Concealed within was a hidden riser that allowed Tim to perform in a surprising and dramatic way.

GLP as the Creative Foundation

The lighting design centred around GLP fixtures: four impression X5s, eight impression X5 Compacts, eight JDC2 IPs and 14 impression X4 Bar 20s. All fixtures were integrated as a floor-standing system—a conscious decision that guaranteed maximum creative freedom and independence from local circumstances and constraints.

The impression X5s provided powerful accents as aisle lights, filling the stage with exceptional colour brilliance and brightness, while the X5 Compacts particularly excelled during the EDM passages in full-pixel mode, generating dense, highly dynamic beam effects. “The X5 Compacts are incredibly fast and precise—perfect for capturing Tim’s musical range,” emphasises Patrick.

Based around the 14 impression X4 Bar 20s, the designer structured the stage on multiple levels—along the edge of the stage and in front of the musician’s risers, giving it additional depth and structure. The eight JDC2 IPs flanked the setup as variable wash and strobe surfaces behind the band, acting as atmospheric backlights at times, or as energetic effect lighting. “The electronic parts in particular benefited from this. Often, the interaction of the JDC2 IPs alone was enough to make the stage pulsate,” he continued.

The creative collaboration between artist and designer was based on trust from the very beginning. “I sent a visualisation, without any specifications—and it clicked immediately,” the designer recalls. Initially, his role should have finished once the concept had been realised, but at the artist’s request, Patrick eventually accompanied the tour personally.

Technical reliability as the basis for creative freedom

The GLP products impressed not only with their design but also their high operational reliability. The tour ran without any technical failures—a critical factor for the show, as Patrick Rabus was in charge of the lighting system himself.AMBION GmbH was the vendor responsible for the technical implementation. With a series of festival appearances, including the Glücksgefühle Festival, and a major tour planned for early 2026, Tim Kamrad continues to maintain a strong live presence. And Patrick Rabus reassures: “GLP will once again be an integral part of the design next time.”
